Episcopalian children from the Hispanic mission San Pablo Apostol, in Seaside, were thrilled to receive backpacks from parishioners at Good Shepherd. From high school students, to middle school, to young ones – smiles and happiness abounded. Thanks to your good hearts and generosity, families that are having a hard time economically, have an easier time sending their kids off to school more fully equipped.

When you come to church this Sunday, you will notice changes to the front of the church. The Memorial Patio is a project that has been waiting for years to be finished. It will memorialize those who have gone before and will stand in welcome to those yet to arrive.
I will be away this week, vacationing in the Tahoe area, with family. The Rev. Marcia Lockwood will preside this Sunday, August 15th and The Rev. Cynthia Montague will preach.
On the following Sunday, August 22nd, we will hear from young people who have been on Mission and at Church Camp plus we will have an archeological dig to discover what happened to the garbage we buried about six months ago. Has it decomposed?

In God’s Peace,

Linda Sig Transparent

SAMPLE EMAIL INVITATION

Dear _______,

Consider joining ___ and me on the evening of Friday, September 24 for some fun, fellowship and fundraising at Church of the Good Shepherd. Art in the Pastures of Heaven promises to be great fun and will offer you the opportunity to view and purchase art by local artists as you support the outreach efforts of our parish.

The mission and outreach of The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd extends locally, regionally and globally through, to name a few projects, monthly housing and feeding the homeless men in the I-Help program of Shelter Outreach Plus, offering visits, books and ministry to prisoners in the Monterey County Jail, books to our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, and lifting families world-wide out of poverty into self-reliance through Heifer International. Good Shepherd parishioners also act locally, providing visits and food to shut-ins or those recuperating from surgery or illness, knitting and gifting prayer shawls to individuals needing that special comfort and extending community fellowship and hospitality in the form of weekly summer barbeques.

Artists’ works will include oils, acrylics, watercolors and photography as well as pottery, fiber and jewelry selections. The tickets are only $25 each; raffle tickets are equally reasonable and might win you a one-week timeshare in Los Cabos, Mexico!

Let me know if you can join us. I’ll plan to call you in a few days to see if you have any questions.

Let’s go, have a good time and be part of the solution in our community!

Thanks,

Outreach

Parish Life

So that we may continue, at Good Shepherd Church, to be good stewards of our planet it is good to keep in mind some important ecological facts…

• If just 25% of U.S. families used 10 fewer plastic bags a month, we would save over 2.5 billion bags a year. Better still, use cloth bags.
• Every year we throw away 24 million tons of leaves and grass. Leaves alone account for 75 % of our solid waste in the fall. If we composted, problem solved.
• Energy saved from one recycled aluminum can will operate a TV set for 3 hours, and is the equivalent to half a can of gasoline. Recycle!
• By turning down your thermostat by one degree, fuel consumption is cut by as much as 10%. That’s what blankets, sweaters, and your honey are for!
• Americans use 50 million tons of paper annually – consuming more than 850 million trees. Go paperless whenever possible!
• And…every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil. A no brainer!
• About 1% of U.S. landfill space is full of disposable diapers, which take 500 years to decompose. Now on the market, certified 100% biodegradable diapers!
• And last but not least, glass produced from recycled glass instead of raw materials reduces related air pollution by 20%, and water pollution by 50%. What’s the message here?
