Double Nickels

Double Nickels Luncheon for those 55 & Up, February 13, 2019

Jim Copeland, a former White House staff member, will speak at the Double Nickels Luncheon for those 55 & Up on February 13th. The luncheon begins at 12:00 noon at Church of the Good Shepherd, 301 Corral De Tierra Rd, off Hwy 68 between Monterey and Salinas.

Copeland, who served on the White House staff of President Jimmy Carter in the late 1970s, will discuss life in the West Wing. His position in the Carter Administration entailed working with the U.S. Congress and coordinating government agencies in communicating the President’s priorities to Congress. He traveled with the President on Air Force One, witnessed and celebrated the Egypt-Israel Peace Accord, attended several States of the Union addresses in the U.S. Capitol and attended the Kennedy Center performance in honor of Chinese Vice Premier Deng Xiaoping. He also took his children to the Easter Egg roll and the lighting of the National Christmas Tree, viewed the Fourth of July fireworks from the White House Lawn and delighted his daughters with birthday celebrations in the White House Mess.

Copeland will describe working in the West Wing, explaining how the White House Congressional Liaison staff helps mold legislation, carries lawmakers’ views regardless of party to the President, and attends meeting after meeting after meeting. He will talk about fun times and stressful times working for President Carter.
